**A Message from Our Sheriff**

Howdy Westerners,

August is upon us. It is hard to believe we are already two-thirds of the way through the year. It won’t be long before our elementary and high schools will be back in session. As your Sheriff, I encourage all of you to be mindful of pedestrians and reduced speed limits when passing through school zones.

I am really looking forward to our Thursday, August 6, Prescott Corral of Westerners dinner meeting. Our fellow member, Brad Courtney, will be giving a talk based on his extensive research of what he calls **“The Prescott and Tombstone Connection.”** He and his wife, Wendy, will also brief us on the events taking place during Prescott’s Doc HolliDaze. Much is planned for the August 14–16, 2026 event. Visit **PrescottTombstoneConnection.org** for more information and tickets.

August was originally called *Sextilis* in the Roman calendar, meaning “sixth month,” before Julius Caesar’s calendar reforms repositioned it as the eighth month. The Roman Senate renamed it in honor of Augustus Caesar in 8 B.C.

Although there are no national holidays in August, a few of August’s “National Days” to remember include:

* **August 1** – National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.

* **August 4** – I wince when I remember we celebrated the U.S. Coast Guard’s Bicentennial. Wow! I can’t believe that was 36 years ago already.

* **August 7** – The United States Coast Guard’s 236th Anniversary.

* **August 7** – National Purple Heart Day, celebrating the award established by George Washington on August 7, 1782.

* **August 26** – National Women’s Equality Day, marking the certification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, which granted women the right to vote in the United States.

Enjoy the rest of our beautiful summer. I look forward to seeing you at our August meeting. Please send your reservations for that night to us in a timely fashion.

Sheriff Ken
